7 of the Most Painful Places to Get a Tattoo (You've Been Warned!)

It’s almost always going to hurt when getting your first tattoo, but some areas are certainly more painful than others. If you’re planning on getting inked in any of the following seven places, it may be time to reconsider! (You’ve been warned!) Read below to find out where these hot spots are and why they hurt so badly...

1) The Ear

The ear is one of the most sensitive spots on your body and it's not uncommon for people to cringe when they see someone getting their ears touched. It's also one of the most painful places on your body that you can get tattooed. Your cartilage is very sensitive and if you touch it, you'll know it. Touching an area with skin around it is bad enough but going directly into the ear canal hurts like hell. If you're getting this done, make sure to get numbing cream beforehand so you don't feel any pain at all!

2) The Cheek

The cheek is one of the most painful places on the body to get tattooed. This is due to two major factors: 1) The skin on your cheeks is very thin, and 2) The area contains lots and lots of nerve endings. This means that you're going to feel that needle digging into your skin much more than you would somewhere like your arm. And for people who have sensitive skin, this could be even worse. But if you have an idea for a design in mind that you can't live without getting permanently on your face? Go for it! Just make sure to do some research before choosing which artist and what type of ink they use before making an appointment.

3) The Hand

When it comes to tattoo placement, one of the most common places is on the hand. More often than not, people will get their kids' names, initials, or birthdates on their hands. Getting inked on your hand can be painful because you're constantly using it for everything from typing on a keyboard to opening a door. Also, these tattoos are more difficult to cover up with long sleeves if you're dealing with any type of job that requires formal attire.

4) Behind the Elbow

The backside of your elbow is a place that many people have tattoos. For many, this tattoo is placed in an area where it can be shown off with clothing options or, for some people, it's just really hard to see. The backside of your elbow is one of the most painful places on the body to get a tattoo because there are so many nerves and tissues located there. If you're looking for something more on the painful side then this may be just what you're looking for! If you're considering getting a tattoo in this spot but don't want it to hurt too much, find an artist who does single needle tattoos rather than large groupings. These needles work better at breaking up the skin and decreasing the pain felt by the recipient.

5) The Ankle

Many people choose to get tattoos on their ankle. You may think that it's an easy and quick place to get tattooed because it's small, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Ankles are very difficult places for tattoos because they are constantly moving around and rubbing against things like socks or other clothing items. The problem with this is that when you're trying to heal your tattoo, you need as little friction as possible in order for it not to scab up or fade too quickly. If you have any other skin condition like eczema or psoriasis, then the healing process will be even more difficult. Some people choose to put bandages over their ankle tattoos in order to avoid contact with anything else that can affect the healing process.

6) The Side of the Neck

The neck is one of the most painful places to get a tattoo. This area is made up from muscles, ligaments, and tendons that are tightly woven together. The skin on your neck is also thinner than other parts of your body because it doesn't have as many nerve endings. Combine this with the constant weight and movement of your head, and you'll have an easy time understanding why getting a tattoo on your neck is so painful! Alternatively, if you're looking for a different place to put your ink, try the side of the rib cage or waist. These areas will be less painful than around your neck but will still allow for good visibility.

7) The Lower Back

One of the most painful places for tattoos is on your lower back, as it's difficult to sit down after getting one. This area also has a higher risk for infection due to possible skin exposure when you put your clothes on or sit down. As a result, many tattoo artists will refuse to ink customers with lower backs. The Wrist: You might be surprised that wrist tattoos are not just easy to get but can be extremely painful! They often require long needles and because of their location, you may need assistance from friends or loved ones to finish them up. The Arm: If there’s one place you should avoid getting tattooed at all costs, it’s your arm!
